LETTER: We are Sick of ICE! Stop The Deportations
Letter signed by labor leaders, artists, activists, cultural workers, academics
As artists, cultural workers, activists, and labor leaders, we are joining millions of Americans for a National Day of Action on July 1st. This action, initiated by grassroots activists, is a national sick-out that will demonstrate our collective power to fight against the Trump administration's "war on immigrants." It is bold actions like these that have often bent the arc of history toward justice. We are sick of the Trump Administration's criminal attacks against the working people of this country, and we are sick of ICE!
Trump's vow to carry out "the largest domestic deportation operation in American History" is a declaration of war against all of us. It is not just an attack on our immigrant families, but all of our civil liberties, and all of the gains of the Civil Rights movement. We can’t leave the immigrant community to fight alone; all citizens have a duty to stand up to this assault.
Trump has already broken up thousands of immigrant families and violently kidnapped our neighbors. He has also tried to strip away our rights to free speech and due process.
The people of this country will not tolerate this any longer. Millions have already taken to the streets to demand an end to Trump's vile, illegal immigration policies. The protests, which began in Los Angeles after masked ICE agents seized undocumented people at their job, inspired people across the country to take action to defend our immigrant neighbors. The Trump administration responded to these courageous people by calling out the National Guard and the Marines to intimidate them. But we will not be intimidated!
In addition to the national sick-out, we can also participate in other actions to support the immigrant community. There have been calls for the following actions:
Support immigrant street vendors and small businesses.
Go to a march, community event, or meet-up.
Donate to an organization taking action or providing emergency relief for immigrant families.
Join or form an immigrant defense committee in your area.
Post messages and videos explaining why you’re participating.
We can defeat Trump and his war on immigrants, but only if we all take action.
